Chipset class decides the emulation ceiling
A handheld's real capability ceiling comes from its chipset CLASS, not its price tag or marketed system list. Budget ARM classes (Allwinner H700-tier) are reliable through PS1 with only partial, per-game success on N64/Dreamcast/PSP. Mid Snapdragon/Unisoc T-class chips push into GameCube/PS2-partial territory. Flagship Snapdragon 8-series chips are the only class where Switch-class experimentation is worth attempting — and even there, performance varies by specific game, emulator, and settings. Integer scaling and the 640x480 fact
Old consoles rendered at fixed low resolutions — 320x240 for PS1, lower still for many 16-bit titles. A screen resolution that's an exact multiple of that — 640x480 is exactly 2x PS1's 320x240 — can integer-scale the image with crisp, uniform pixels. Why N64, Saturn, and Dreamcast are hard to emulate
Despite being from a similar console generation to PS1, N64, Saturn, and Dreamcast use unusual, non-standard graphics hardware that doesn't map cleanly onto modern GPU pipelines — the N64's imprecise texture-combiner math, the Saturn's dual-CPU quad-textured VDP1/VDP2 architecture, and Dreamcast's tile-based PowerVR renderer are architecturally atypical, not simply "more powerful." OLED vs IPS
OLED panels give true per-pixel blacks and higher contrast, flattering pixel-art color grading, while IPS panels are cheaper and avoid any long-term burn-in risk from static menus/HUDs. Neither changes emulation performance — that's the chipset's job. See OLED vs IPS for Retro Handhelds.
Hall-effect vs potentiometer sticks
Stick drift comes from potentiometer sticks wearing down their resistive tracks with use. Hall-effect sticks use a magnet and contactless sensor instead, largely eliminating drift over the device's lifetime, at a small manufacturing cost premium — which is why budget-tier devices more often ship potentiometer sticks while mid- and premium-tier devices increasingly ship hall-effect. Form factor: bar, clamshell, vertical

The accessory that actually matters
Of all handheld accessories, the microSD card has the single biggest real-world impact — a slow or counterfeit card causes stutter and corrupted saves regardless of chipset class, and counterfeit cards are common enough on general marketplace listings that buying from an official brand storefront matters.
